CHESS TOURNAMENT FOR BELGAUM SCHOOL BOYS AND GIRLS:

BELGAUM CHESS(CLUB) ASSN,in association with Lions Club of Midtown,Belgaum is organising "Sardar V.G.Naik Bahaddur Desai Memorial Chess Tournament" for School Boys and Girls on 13th January, 2008 at Hotel Pai Hall, Nehru nagar Behind Ramdev Hotel ,Belgaum. The tournament will be on Swiss league basis. The FIRST category I to IV standard and SECOND category V to VII standard. RESULTS OF 1 DAY RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT:
One day Rapid Chess Tournament was sucessfully conducted by the BDCAssn @ Hotel Pai Party hall, Nehru nagar, Belagum on Sunday, 16/12/2007. The tourney attracted 42 players of various age category. The event was sponsoured by M/s. Sourabha Enterprises (Authorised dealer for TATA BP Solar I Ltd). The tournament was 6 rounds swiss league managed by Sri. D.R. Rao, Sri.P.K.Kulkarni, Sri. Prakash Desai, Sri. C.D.Navalgund, & Sri. Aniket Pawashe.

South Kanara District Chess Association (SKDCA) will organize under-13 boys and girls state chess championship-2007 on behalf of United Karnataka Chess Association at Karnataka Bank Employees' Association Auditorium, Bejai here from November 16 to November 18, informed Gururaj MS, president, SKDCA.
He was speaking at press conference here on Monday November 05. The main intention of organizing the event is to promote chess at the gross root level and to motivate chess players of the state. The entry fee, Rs 50, is very reasonable, he said. This is mainly to encourage players from rural areas and economically backward sections of the society, he added. Unlike the tradition where top two players qualified to compete at the national level, this year SKDCA has decided to select top five players as it has realized that in "the top-two selection" the selection of winners largely depends on luck factor as the selection depends on the performance by other players, he added. Total of ten players will get free entry for the national championship which will be held in Delhi between December 14 & 22, he said. It expects more than 250 entries especially from Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, he said. The entry must reach the association on or before Tuesday November 13, he added. Praveen T Mayya, vice-president, Syble Lydia D'Cunha, general secretary, Vasantha Lakshmi, treasurer and Pratibha Ranjan, joint treasurer were present at the press conference.

. M.suraj was a top seed.M.Suraj of Bangalore finished up with 5 points with a high progressive score. Stany .g.a of Shimoga finished with 5 points with a slight low progress than suraj. He defeated M.Suraj in the last round. A.Balkissan of Bangalore scored 4.5 points with 3RD place. He was lucky in the last round against Niranjan.C.Navalgund and secured draw being a Exchange down . Why Learn chess?
Chess teaches a skill that can be applied to other aspects of life. For example, it teaches one to plan carefully in advance, to visualize various situations before making a move, and the importance of patience. How many of us have acted without thinking and then wished we could take back our actions? Well, the game of chess will quickly teach a child to analyze before acting. Chess improves schoolwork and grades. Numerous studies have proven that kids obtain a higher reading level, math level and a greater learning ability overall as a result of playing chess. ConcentrationChess makes your child concentrate at the board for hours. Chess player forgets about the world outside the tournament hall. Even in Under 7 nationals, children play 2 rounds of 4 hours each per day. Parents of chess playing kids often tell me how chess has developed a habit in their children to seat and concentrate at one place.
LogicThe action-reaction mechanism is prevalent in chess, like other logical activities. This teaches your child to look objectively at a position. Beginners are often surprised at the complexity of play at the top levels in chess. However, a Grandmaster must still follow the same logical theories and themes as the most basic chess beginner. This is because chess is a logical game.
MemoryChess is one of the few activities that can assist in memory improvement. A chess player always tries to remember patterns and positions. He makes his moves based on what he learns from his own games and also games of other players from various tournaments collected from tournament books and databases. Chess students perform well in math and spelling because both these fields demand memorization of themes and ideas.
Awareness and AnalysisA chess player learns to be aware of the key aspects in a position, analyses them, and react. Chess students often claim they have a better feel for this awareness and analysis in school. In this way more time is spent studying what will be on the exam instead of what won't be.
Decision MakingDuring a game, a chess player has to take decisions based on different features of the position on the board and calculation of variations for both the sides. He has to choose the best move from complicated position and that also in limited time. This develops ability to take prompt decision.
